breaking news workshop

BY Siyamthanda Mbanga

On 23 January, the Media Club held a media workshop with guest speaker and journalist, Miss Pienaar. The workshop was titled Breaking News and it was about all things to do with journalism and the news.
The workshop was a continuation of a workshop Miss Pienaar presented late last year. This year the Riebeek girls definitely wanted Miss Pienaar to come back and continue with her amazing workshop.
The role of media, writing, headlines, photography and facing the media were a few of the many topics discussed in the workshop. Miss Pienaar wonderfully explained these topics with great elaboration while also telling a few related jokes on the side to make the workshop very interesting.
Learners from Grade 8 to 12 learned from Miss Pienaar that the main roles of media are to expose corruption, educate, to be informative, and to act as a watchdog of democracy. Writting skills were also elaborated by Miss Pienaar including the Inverted Pyramid of Journalism and the Martini Glass.
At the end of the workshop, Miss Pienaar received a gift handed to her by Miss Mxoli on behalf of the Media Club as a token of our appreciation. We would like to thank Miss Pienaar for an amazing workshop, yet again, it was very much appreciated. We would also like to thank Mrs Gerber for making Miss Pienaar's visit to Riebeek possible and Miss Mxoli for being the representative of the Media Club and for wrapping up the workshop nicely in the end with a summary of what skills and content we had acquired.
