rock the hage press release

Riebeek College Girls’ High School in North Street, Uitenhage, is proud to be hosting the annual ROCK THE HAGE concert, in association with Rotary Uitenhage District. Rock the Hage, Uitenhage, will take place on Friday 23 March and Saturday 24 March, starting at 6pm each evening and expected to end at approximately 11.30.  Doors will open at 5.30 for music enthusiasts wanting to secure the best spot. Making this event special for the band, Daytrippers, is that they celebrate 50 years playing together with the original members. The Daytrippers, Poltergeist (with musicians from the UK and Australia), Riaan Vogel and the Riebeek College Band will perform on both nights. Friday’s performances include Anton Calitz, a teacher at Riebeek College who will perform with the Silver Horse Band, and Tank (an international act who had hits in the 1970s).  Saturday’s performances will include Bedlam, Axyl, Beanie Rebels and In the Mix.
Riebeek College is proud of their own contribution to the musical line-up on the two evenings.  Teacher at the school, Anton Calitz, has recorded and published five original music albums and performed  his musical locally and in the U.K. and Ireland.  He has performed at the Grahamstown Arts Festival and his Kwaaihoek Stories concert remains a firm favourite on the local scene.  Author Hagen Engler famously said of Anton Calitz in 2011 in a tribute to the legends of Port Elizabeth: “Anton Calitz, the tortured, guitar-wielding wordsmith on his one-man crusade for self-expression.”
The Riebeek band was established with funds donated by Kim Clement and Rock The Hage, with the aim to buy music equipment for the schools. This eclectic group of young rockers and stunning performers will dazzle with their stage presence and distinctive sound.  Every performance of this edgy, electrifying group has led to standing ovations so concert goers are in for a musical delight.  The girls may appear petite but once they belt out their sounds, their power is undeniable.
Well known musician, John van Vuuren, has again been co-ordinating the line-up of this nostalgic annual event that conjures up, for many, the years of growing up in Uitenhage in the 1970s and 1980s. This blast from the past, with an infusion of the young and new in the form of the Riebeek band, spans generations though with the mix of musos performing. Rock the Hage offers a weekend of good food (on sale at the venue), good music and good company.  Soft drinks are available for sale at the venue, and adults are invited to bring their own refreshments.  Tickets are available at R70 per person and can be obtained from the Uitenhage South Rotary members or Alan Reynolds on 082 556 4585 or between 7.30 and 3.30 at Riebeek College.  Tickets will be sold at the door if space permits it, so it is advisable to obtain your tickets ahead of time.  Riebeek College does have a right of admission policy in place.
Principal, Mrs Kieran Stear, said, “We are excited to be extending a warm Riebeek welcome to the music lovers of the Metro.  We hope to see many of our Old Girls join us for an informal reunion and we are grateful to our parents and Rotary for their involvement.  We are also thrilled to have the audience watch our young band members hold their own against the greats who will perform on our stage.”
