Hostel Awards: Mrs K. Stear and Oyisa Buso, recipient of the Spirit Cup, awarded by the Stear family.

On day one all the grade seven learners received their instructions and what is expected of them at the end of the assignment. The creativity and passions for what everyone wanted to do and sell on the market day were extremely inspiring.
By the end of the second week most of the groups already had their business plans setup, their A4 adverts made and their item lists finished. The success of the market day was a war over the invisible, but with the help of all the staff in the junior school as well as the student teachers, the market day prevailed and the amount made in total of this year’s grade seven market day was R16 784.00.
Thank you to all who supported the grade sevens in making their market day a huge success.

The second runner-up In the Senior category was Musa Daweti whose heavenly voice was one to remember for ages to come. Eleanor girls and staff decided that for their annual house day, they wanted to raise funds for Dano Swart, a fellow Grade 12 learner from Brandwag, who was badly injured during a rugby match. Our guest speaker, Ms Nerine Loock, is well-known to all at Riebeek, as our school psychologist. She is also involved with Dano, as she is his rugby team’s physiotherapist. Ms. Loock gave an uplifting talk about living in the moment and not taking anything for granted. Eleanor house captain, Maceyla van Huyssteen, proudly handed over a cheque of R3 326 to Dano’s rugby coach, who joined our assembly on behalf of Dano and his family. The Eleanor matrics and staff worked tirelessly to raise as much as we possibly could in the two weeks we had before our house assembly. Our emoji favours were a huge success, and Maceyla van Huyssteen won the prize for buying the most, a whopping 150! Megan MacGorman and Gabriella Hardman won prizes for accumulating the second most favours. We also had a “guess the number of jellybeans in the jar” competition, and this was won by Liyabona Mgushelo, who was spot on with her guess of 789! Mrs Stroebel is extremely proud of all the hard work put in by all the Eleanor girls, and very thankful that everyone supported our house so generously.

Media Workshop: The ABC of writing
By Candice Rossouw
A media workshop, The ABC of writing, was presented by Hasti Pansuriya on 6 August 2019 where all Grade 8-12 learners were welcome to attend. Hasti presented a great workshop on the importance of writing creatively and gave us some useful tips on how to write excellent articles.
The workshop was intriguing and made us aware that there was more to writing than we initially thought. Hasti Pansuriya did a great job by presenting us with a PowerPoint presentation and some videos that gave us more insight into how we should formulate our writing. The learners in attendence were really interested and actively participated. Hasti offered us some useful ways to start the brainstorming process as there is nothing as terrible as writer's block! The workshop was really helpful especially to the Media Club members as we actively tried to figure out new styles of writing articles.
The workshop was well presented and it definitely let the creative juices flow! We would like to thank Hasti Pansuriya for the wonderful workshop, Mrs Gerber, Miss Mxoli and the Media Club members for attending.

Opponents: St Dominic's Priory
Result: Drew
Score: 1 - 1
Scorer/s:
Comments: The girls have once again put in a great performance. They could easily have been 4 goals up but only manage to score 1 in the 1st half. They have had numerous attempts but unfortunately couldn't capitalize.
A quick equalizer at the start of the second half left them searching for a winning goal. More opportunities came their way. This one was definitely for the taking.
In the end they had to settle for a draw. Well played ladies. Certainly better than a lose. I am very proud of you. You fought hard until the final whistle.
Players of note are Deenah Dollie, Chané van Jaarsveld, Avigaill Goliath and last but not least, the goalscorer, Taytum-Paige Bosch.
Thank you to the parents who came to support. It is much appreciated.

We welcomed the Uitenhage Atlas Security team, Mr Mark Hitchins and Mrs Bernadette Nel-Naude, to Riebeek for a talk on self-defense.
Mrs Nel-Naude, who has been the Community Development Manager for 15 years, is very passionate about the empowerment and safety of women and lives by the saying “We as women should have the right to live without fear.” She gave points on how to stay safe in dangerous situations, and said to always be alert and aware of one’s surroundings. She gave us good advice, such as to look out for other women and to always report an attack if we see or know of one that happened. A message that stuck out in Mrs Nel-Naude’s speech is “As a female, you are powerful. As a sisterhood, you are unstoppable.” We would like to thank the Atlas Security team for taking the time to come to Riebeek to share with us important tips to stay safe and to empower each other.

Hockey results: The u/14 team beat Andrew Rabie 12-0. They also beat Despatch u/14 10-0 . The girls are stepping up their performance game by game .Team performance and great work ethic is the secret of this unbeatable team. Our u/16 team could not make the fixture so the same u/14 girls competed against Despatch u/16 and beat them convincingly 3_0. The 1st team match also went Riebeek's way as we won against Despatch 1st team 2-0 .With the absence of Anovuyo Singeni, with a knee injury, and key players, Chaneal Lebercensie and Roshaan May; we had to call on our young energetic Jade Kayser, Trune Viljoen and Joy Gosani. The girls immediately stepped up and showed that they will be a force to reckon with next year as Trune Viljoen scored our second goal. Well done to the girls on a great team performence.

Matriculants Leadership Seminar, by Amy Schambril and Joanne Miller
“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other” – John F Kennedy. These words are the fundamental parts of the Uithenhage Matriculants Leadership Seminar as it based on developing young minds to become great leaders through teaching
Robyn Minnaar, Joanne Miller, Danita Prag, and Amy Schambril took part in the five-day programme (1 July - 5 July), which took place at "passion turned business" Agape Coffee shop.
Over the course of the week, learners from different high schools in Uitenhage learnt about leadership topics such as self-leadership, levels of leadership and could later identify which type of leader they are. The Personal Branding session was all about how to make yourself a successful brand and build an online portfolio by assessing what to do and what not to do on social media. The next topic was Goal settings which was a true eye opener to all the students present. Assertiveness was the last topic of the week, and after content was covered, the learners practiced being assertive through role play which was thoroughly enjoyed. On Friday, learners were treated by guest speakers who shared their experiences about the working environment and their personal leadership positions in their industry. The students also had to present presentations and feedback on what they had learnt the past week. The learners then participated in an Amazing Race. The game consisted of riddles, treasure hunting, and lots and lots of running.
Joanne said that the seminar was an incredible experience. “I learnt a lot more that what I anticipated and it has changed many aspects in my life, such as learning how to handle situations and communicate with people in an assertive manner”.
Two of the biggest eye openers for Joanne was personal branding and goal setting. “Learning more about my personal brand made me realise that no matter what stage of your life you are in, you need to be aware of the way in which you present yourself. I thought I had all of my goals set out but I wasn’t even halfway there. We learnt how to make our goals smarter by taking different aspects and piecing them together to create a plan for your goal,' Joanne stated.
The learners really enjoyed learning about the relevant, important and interesting content. As if gaining knowledge isn't enough, the ladies also gained the friendship of their fellow scholars which made the week even better. Break times were filled with laughter, muffins and seeing who the Uno champion was. The Riebeek ladies look forward to the Recognition Awards where they will be reunited with the friends they made.
A big thank you to the facilitators: Gerald Pietersen, Sherri-Ann Pietersen, Deneal Williams and Lucinda October, who gave up so freely of their time to help develop the minds of the future leaders. Their passion and dedication inspire all that they meet and they are truly appreciated. Thank you also to Miss Meyers for taking initiative and helping Riebeek learners take part in this empowering initiative.

Junior U13A Hockey Team
By Mr Basil Jonas (Coach)

The U13A Hockey Team attended the 20th Anne Beagley Junior Rugby & Hockey Festival in Graaff-Reinet from Friday 14th to 17th June.

This is a prestigious festival attended by top schools in the Eastern Cape.   The girls have had a fun and memorable experience.

The results were as follows:

Sat.    Riebeek        0 – 2 Stutterheim

Sun.   Riebeek        2 – 2 Volkskool Laer Skool
Sun.   Riebeek        1 – 2 Hudson Park
Sun.   Riebeek        0 – 2 Victoria Girls

Mon.   Riebeek        0 – 1 Gonubie

Goal scorers:
Taytum-Paige Bosch (1) and Lauren Labercensie (1)
Taytum-Paige Bosch (1)

Judging by the results it was a very competitive festival.     The girls did their best to keep the scores low as well as great character and sportsmanship throughout the festival.

Emphasis on Festival as this is a platform to meet long life friends and experience hockey on a different level.   The competition was tough, but they stood tall and have had many moments of brilliance.   Injuries to Lauren Labercensie, Taytum-Paige Bosch and illness of Nikaylynne Ford for almost the whole weekend left us struggling to cope with the pace, set pieces and team plans.

Nonetheless we have had many opportunities to win some but unfortunately just could not keep our nerve.   Games against Volkskool, Hudson Park, and Gonubie were close and could easily have gone in our favour.  The girls have shown great skill and determination even though we are not comfortable on Astro surfaces.

Some of the comments by players:
“It was a fun experience.   We met a lot of new friends and got along well.   We did our best but there is room for improvement.   We played as a team and enjoyed our time there.   We got to know each other more and became closer as a team.”

“During our stay at Union I felt a mix of emotions and had a very fun time with family and friends.   I enjoyed playing with the rest of the team and even though some of the games were tough, we never gave up, we held our heads high and still carried on playing well.”

It was super exciting leading up top the weekend.   It was a huge learning experience for all of us.   We made new friendships over the weekend through fun with all activities such as movie night, carnival and socials.”

“Our hockey tour to Union was an event to remember.   We had so much fun.   Even though we didn’t win our matches we still had plenty of fun.   This was indeed one for the memory books.”

“Our team is getting better at playing on Astro.   Sleeping in one dorm made the whole team become closer.   All our matches were close to wins and I just want to say that I am very proud to be in a team full of amazing people like you.”

“I thank Miss H and Mr Jonas for all their time they gave up being with us and as well as the parents for coming to support.”

In the last week of the June holidays, Malikiwe Hoffman was invited by the Department of Education and Mr Stephenson of Muir College to participate in a programme to extend learners' knowledge of the medical field. Malikiwe wrote, " I was lucky to receive an opportunity with two Muir boys to accompany three students from Asia to various health care private practices and public health and welfare clinics including one in Missionvale. This program enabled me to get a glimpse of what life in Medicine is like and this was helpful because I myself would like to become a doctor. The program also enabled us to make new friends and exchange knowledge with them and also understand the differences in our upbringings, school systems and many other things. This was truly a once in a life time opportunity that I will always cherish as it has changed the way I view situations, my goals in life and has made me appreciate all that I have."

Team: Junior Hockey 1st Team
Coach: Mr B G Jonas
Captain: Taytum-Paige Bosch
Date: Wednesday 31 July 2019
Opponents: Herbert Hurd
Result: Lost
Score: 0 - 1
Score/s: None
Comments: The girls played as a team for once. They communicated very well. They never gave up. They were determined and showed great sportsmanship against all odds.
A slight lack of concentration in the last 2 minutes resulted in a soft goal. They were not disappointed with the result as they played their best game of the season. I am very proud of them.
Well done to Poshika Ramsamy in the goalposts for stopping many attempts. One very good strike directly to her head broke her helmet but not even that scared her. Well done to the whole team for putting in the extra effort to pull off this result after being beaten 3 - 1 by the same opponents a few weeks ago.
Thank you to the parents who came to support. It is much appreciated.

Algoa FM: an adventure and a half
by Azraa Rockman
“Because the future is Youth, and the voices that the land’s children choose to share.”
-Ah SooRah
It would be merely an understatement to say that I had learned a lot during my experience at Algoa FM. While auditioning for a spot in the Youth Day Crew of 2019 could appear to be the most challenging part of the journey, the immense amount of hard work that had been put into the day should also be taken into account. Admittedly, a few obstacles and challenges had been met along the way. However, it was by pushing through these obstacles that had made the whole adventure at Algoa even more rewarding.
From my very first training session at Algoa FM after my acceptance into the YD Crew, I found myself greatly intrigued by the ins and outs of the radio station. With assistance from our Programme Manager, Baydu Adams, my crew and I were all given the opportunity to fully understand the importance of radio, and how providing a voice to the youth, for the youth is something that needs to be accomplished in South Africa in the near future. Basic team tasks were given to us during the early stages of our training, whereby we were allowed to put our heads together and come up with ideas regarding what to talk about on the day of the Youth Day Programme. By providing a platform for us to brainstorm with one another, we found ourselves forming close bonds, not only as colleagues, but as friends in this work-like environment. In this way, we were able to grow through the experience in a comfortable and practical environment together.
The adventure, however, had also allowed me to display some of my own talents as an individual. In the process of our training, our Programme Manager had called for us to come up with our very own designs for the display of our YD Crew website, as well as for our crew T-shirts. While I at first did not intend to submit a design, my gut feeling had urged me to do so. And to my complete surprise, my rough sketches had impressed both my fellow crew members and Algoa staff alike. I was elated to find out that my design had inspired the layout of the crew T-shirts, and it was truly an honour to see my artwork pinned up at the desk of Algoa’s graphic designer.
I must admit, however, that I often found myself feeling nervous with regards to which role I would be playing in Algoa FM’s Youth Day Programme on 17 June. While positions for sound engineer, videographer, blogger, photographer, and coordinator had already been filled, our Programme Manager had not yet at that time come to a decision regarding who would be taking on the other roles, such as news readers, presenters and producers. From the beginning of training, I had my eye on the position of presenting, since I had mentioned in my audition that I had a love for public speaking and that I wanted to share my voice with others as much as I possibly could. Thankfully, I was officially given the role as presenter for the Lunch Time Show with Mio from 12-3pm with my fellow Lunch Time presenter Annika van der Merwe and our producer, Kezia Martin. From there onward, the three of us had begun working together more closely to ensure that our show made our fellow youth proud.
Arriving at the Algoa FM studio on the day of the Youth Day Programme felt completely different to how it had been before. While there was a definite sense of nervous energy surrounding us, the studio seemed to be more lively and full of laughs upon arrival. We were, for the most part, confused by the fact that almost all of the adult staff were missing from their desks. But thanks to the staff that were at the station, I was feeling a lot more comfortable by the time I needed to take hold of the mic with my team. The anxiety of the first five minutes had vanished by the time I had started speaking, and halfway in, I truly began to feel as if the studio was my domain. I had a lot of fun talking about the topics that I had chosen with my team, namely, how to make money in Grade 11, women empowerment and its importance in South Africa, as well importance of celebrating the LGBTQ Community in our country. We were even given the opportunity to interview Craig Lucas, the winner of the Voice 2016 as we asked him about his career in music and how it had benefitted him in his life thus far. The three hours seemed to fly by very fast, and by the time that our show was over, my team members and I could not believe that we were already near the end of the day. Thankfully, we were each given the opportunity to send shout-outs to the people who supported us throughout our journey and to those who helped us along the way.
Saying goodbye to the YD Crew and Algoa FM studio was definitely a bittersweet moment. While we had all found ourselves feeling accomplished because of the stellar end result, we were sad that our journey had come to an end. However, I am still grateful that I was given the opportunity to share my voice with the youth of Algoa Country. A special thank you to my parents for the constant encouragement and support provided along the way, as well as to Mrs Peltason and Mrs Gerber for instilling my love for both public speaking and work in the different aspects of the media. While the adventure is over, the memory still lingers, as well as the lessons learned in the process, and the lessons learned at Algoa FM are truly ones that I will never forget.

RESULTS OF THE ENGLISH OLYMPIAD EXAMINATION
The English Olympiad Examination was written on the first Tuesday in March. The following results were achieved in these categories:
MERIT: Babalwa Kefile, Sinavuyo Gingqini, Hasti Pansuriya, Wade-Lee Muller, Jade Rudman, Lisakhanya Daniels and Malakhiwe Hoffman.
BRONZE: Romesa Muhammad, Robyn Minnaar, Chaneal Labercensie, Inganathi Manthewu, Neve Burness,  and Inganathi Konono.
SILVER:  Kiara Brink, Lerise Johnson, Qhamisa Mata, Alexandra Dennis, and Azraa Rockman.
While there were no Gold Awards this year, the results were really quite exceptional, as there were no Participation Awards – a very good effort. Azraa Rockman replaced Casey Els at the very last minute and still managed a Silver Award, which bodes well for an attempt in 2020.
I wish to extend my personal thanks to Miss Barnard for her assistance with tutorials while I act in an advisory capacity on matters relating to the Olympiad Examination.  Miss Barnard’s passion surely must impact on the candidates’ interest and ultimate success.

Riebeek College welcomes Miss Nosibabalo Tetani. Miss Tetani was born and raised in Makhanda, where she attended Ntsika Secondary School and matriculated in 2013. She read for her BA at Rhodes University, majoring in Journalism, IsiXhosa and Anthropology. While at Rhodes she worked at the library as an assistant and tutored fellow students and matriculants in the area.
She is passionate about people and originally wanted to study journalism because she says "I wanted to be the voice of the voiceless, but in time I realised that everything begins with the foundation we set for our children." In 2018 she completed her PGCE which gave her the tools and opportunity to help build the future she envisions.
Miss Tetani enjoys meeting new people and her warm, bubbly personality endear her to everyone she meets. She hopes to enhance her skills and challenge herself to greater heights while at Riebeek.
Welcome to the Riebeek family Miss Tetani! Miss Tetani will be teaching Life Orientation, History and Library, filling in for Mrs Myburg for a while.

The Drama Society attended the National Arts Festival in Makhanda on 7 July. The programme of the day included watching a theatre production entitled "#selflove" that focused on modern day women and how they viewed themselves in realtion to social media and also their different roles in society. It was most fitting for our girls. We continued enjoying the festival by having free time to explore the wonderful town of Makhanda and especially enjoying all that the Village Green had to offer: From delicious food at the food court to interesting stalls and entertainment. Thank you to Miss R. Meyers and Mr. D. de Beer for driving us to and from Makhanda and offering great supervision.
