hostel aftercare

Two of our girls who make use of the aftercare service at the hostel reported on their experiences. Sihlumile Mongo in Grade 5R wrote, "The Hostel is a fun place to study and rest after a rough day. The best thing about the hostel is prep because you get to do your homework in peace. All the seniors at the hostel are nice. I love resting time because you get to rest if you are really tired. Mrs Moss makes the best tea. I really love the hostel's food especially the pizza (it is super nice!). Sometimes I really wish I could stay at the hostel away from home just for a while. Just to know the hostel routine and stuff like that. I think the hostel is cool! Everyone at the hostel deserves a prize for being patient and helpful." Amahle Ntabeni wrote, "The hostel is a great place to be. The hostel helps you improve and focus more on your school work because sometimes when you go home, you won't be able to concentrate on your work so you rush through it without even checking for mistakes. But, when you are at the hostel you will be able to do your homework peacefully without any disturbance. Mrs Moss and Mrss Sandalls (Mrs Sandy) are awesome, so are Mrs Peltason and the duty teachers. They will help you with whatever you need! Hostel is a great place to rest after a long day. The hostel is the best and the hostel boarders are awesome."

Hostel assembly

29 April

Mrs Peltason and the hostel girls held a fundraiser and hosted a very special assembly. The girls performed a short play and it was clear that boarders are very dramatic and talented. Then it time for an awesome guest speaker. Lelethu “PoeticSoul” Mahambehlala heeded to her call for poetry in 2003 driven by a passion to empower school children and women. This saw the start of a journey that has led to her launching an album in 2015. She launched herself as an underground poet in her home town of Port Elizabeth and her talent has seen her blossoming into a recognisable brand within the Eastern Cape. PoeticSoul has performed along the likes of Lebo Mashile, Mac Manaka, and Sibongile Khumalo who are amongst the greats of the South African Creative Industry and as such has earned her stripes in successfully allowing her talent to lead her passion. Lelethu is a poet from who has made waves since she stepped on stage when she won LentswePoetryProject2006.A language activist who worked with the NMMU language department in shaping high school minds in appreciating language through poetry, she encouraged the girls to accept that it is what it is and so choose happiness. Change is the only constant, she reminded the girls.

message from the hostel headgirl

Awona Kwatsha

2016 saw eight new boarders joining our hostel and they arrived nervous and a bit scared.  During the second week of school we held our orientation programme with different activities such as fashion shows, singing, dancing and acting and the new girls adopted dolls to spend time with.  There were some jogging sessions in the mornings and afternoons.  On 3rd February we had our first social with Muir and we interacted with activities to get to know each other and the new borders had a great time with their counterparts from Muir.  There was also a jamming session and the Muir matrics showed off their dance skills.

Hostel is a home away from home and it is where you have sisters and loving duty teachers and matrons and wonderful staff.  Sometimes you shed a tear for your other home, but we do all enjoy being in the hostel.  It is the best and there is no place like hostel where we laugh, cry, smile and tease each other.  There is no better accessory than your hostel sisters.  And we are all sisters by heart and partners in seeking academic success and character excellence.

Hostel Leadership

BY Hostel Leadership

Siziphiwe Vumazonke reports, "I felt overjoyed to be chosen as a hostel leader. When Mrs Woods called my name, I was shocked because I did not expect it. I thank Mrs Woods and Mrs Peltason for giving me this opportunity."
Sibonokuhle Baart reports, "Being a hostel prefect is such an honour. It has been my goal since I was a new pot in Grade 8. I am so happy to have made it. I would like to thank Mrs Peltason, Mrs Woods and Mrs Moss for preparing me for this title and responsibility. I am humbled by their love and trust in me."
Rasilingwane Elelwani said, "When I heard that I was the Head of Hostel, I was happy but nervous at the same time. I was nervous because I did not know if I would be able to lead by example and be responsible. I was beyond happy though and I cannot even put into words how excited I am. I thank Mrs Woods and Mrs Peltason for this opportunity."
Mrs Peltason reports: At the end of 2014 no selection of Head Girl and prefects were announced. Only two appointments were made: Elelwani Rasilingwane, prefect, and de facto Head Girl, and Kuhle Baart, Prefect. At the time everyone knew that this was a temporary state of affairs and not ideal. When Siziphiwe returned to the hostel she began serving as a Monitor. All three returned early to prepare for the arrival of the girls. These girls have done so well, have been such examples to others and have put in much time and service to the hostel. They deserve to be acknowledged as the leaders they are. Congratulations Elelwani on your appointment of Head Girl and Kuhle and Siziphiwe as prefects. You have the full support of the girls and the staff.
This year the matric girls far outnumber any other grade at the hostel. These girls have committed themselves to improving their grades and getting the very best possible matric pass. Nevertheless we acknowledge their seniority and leadership and believe that each one of them has an equal contribution to make in youth leadership in the Sholto McIntyre Hostel.
