Riebeek to undertake 100 acts of kindness
RIEBEEK College Girls High School in Uitenhage is paying it forward with 100 acts of kindness through its Mandela100@Riebeek100 campaign, having completed nine of the acts thus far.
Annually the school adopts a theme and this year it is Ubuntu, says principal Kieran Stear.
The project was launched about two weeks ago, and is aimed at teaching and illustrating the principles of ubuntu, namely humanity, a community spirit and compassion for others.
Stear said: “We wanted to commit Riebeek to making 2018 a year of service and love for others to make a difference in the world. It being the centenary year of the birth of Nelson Mandela, who lived by the values of ubuntu, we decided that we should try to honour him.
“We are going to make every day a Mandela Day as we seek to demonstrate ubuntu and the Madiba magic that Mr Mandela was famous for . . . Our project is Mandela100@Riebeek100 acts of kindness.”
Among the first acts of kindness have been raising funds for the SPCA, taking flowers to the elderly, and volunteering for feeding and cleaning up at Bayworld.
