oral history competition - omhle to go to nationals

BY Omhle Bissett

The iNkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History Competition took place in East London on the 15 and 16 September 2016. This was the provincial round as 8 finalists were going to be chosen to represent the Eastern Cape. Omhle Bissett in Grade 10 at Riebeek College Girls’ High School represented the Uitenhage District at this event and writes: “We, the participants, had to do research in a topic we chose. The research had to be put in a file and submit it to the adjucators. After submitting the file, we had to do a presentation for 10 minutes on the research we had done. I had chosen the topic: Freedom, democracy and History of my school; how my school changed since the advent of democracy in 1994.
I was accompanied to East London for the competition by Mr Gert Tarentaal from the Department of Education in the Uitenhage District and by Ms Moko(Yolanda Mni's mother: Yolanda was Riebeek’s headgirl in 2016 and Ms Moko is a local History teacher). On the 15th we presented our file and on the 16th the students who hadn't presented on the 15th presented and 5 teachers also presenting on how they prepared their students for the competition and out of that 5 learners  and 2  two teachers were chosen for nationals. We slept at the Hotel Osner, just opposite the beachfront.
This trip was educational as we were told who Albert Luthuli was. He was a Zulu chief and a teacher who believed education was the most important thing. The trip provided me with the chance to make new friends and learn more about History. I would like to thank Mrs Gerber for helping and guiding me in my project, Mr Tarentaal for also giving me some pointers as he is the subject advisor for History  in the Uitenhage District, Mrs Woods, Riebeek’s principal, for her support and guidance, and Ms Moko for accompanying us to East London. The nationals of the competition will be held in Pretoria in October.
