Pocket Code Of Conduct

BY Riebeek College

ACADEMICS

We try our best, despite difficulties

We do our school work diligently, conscientiously and with dedication

We strive to be the best we can be

We respect our personal academic efforts and respect those helping us
“The more I see, the less I know for sure.” John Lennon

SCHOLARSHIP

We strive to lay a solid foundation on which learning in a safe and loved environment is conducive to the development of the individual in totality

We are involved and concentrate on work in the classroom

We are always prompt in attending lessons
“Knowledge talks, wisdom listens.” Jimi Hendrix

ENCOURAGEMENT

We uphold our motto, “Ora et Labora” (Pray and Work)

We “seek the good in others” and “always do our best”

We lay emphasis on good sportsmanship on and off the sports fields

We see how you play the game as of paramount importance, rather than just celebrating a win. This means we can accept a loss gracefully

We encourage each other to be generous with smiles to spread happiness in the world
“If you meet someone who does not have a smile, you should give him or her one of yours.”
“Nine tenths of education is encouragement.” Anatole France

UNIFORM AND APPEARANCE

The official school uniform (clearly marked) is worn appropriately according to the occasion and season

Correct deportment and register should apply at all times, even when wearing civvies

Good grooming (including clean manicured nails and shiny hair that is appropriately coiffeured) is considered a mark of self-respect

Learners may submit a written application to the School Governing Body for total or partial exemption from one or more of the items contained in the code of conduct based on cultural, religious or medical grounds

Only a plain wrist watch is allowed. No jewellery accessories of any kind are permissible.

Learners will wear their own name badge at all times and under no circumstances try to be deceptive by assuming another’s identity.
“Your appearance, attitude and confidence define you as a person.”  Lori Myers

RESPONSIBILITY

We endorse the Code of Conduct in its entirety

We are good ambassadors for the school in the courtesy and respect for others that we show

Our strength comes through our responsibility to collaborate and unite

We learn to interact with a broad spectrum of people of different ages, cultures and stages of development and to treat them accordingly, developing a mutual respect

We accept responsibility for ourselves, our conduct and our actions

We expect our learners to follow procedures and instruction
“The final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands.”  Anne Frank

ACHIEVEMENT

We compete with our own best efforts

We always aim high

We never take our abilities for granted. We try to live balanced lives spiritually, physically and intellectually

We give due thanks to those who have helped us achieve: our families, teachers and peers
“No bees, no honey; no work, no money.” Leila

VALUES

We acknowledge the value of:

Goodness

Kindness

Joy

Patience

Self-control

Peace

Faithfulness

Gentleness

Love

We honour the earth and Mother Nature with our efforts to support the environment by picking up litter and contributing towards a cleaner planet and survival of the species.
“The best things in life aren’t things.” Art Buchwald

COMMUNICATION

We shall communicate in English as the school is the practice ground for improving the standard of the language in which we have chosen to study (The exception being in the Afrikaans and isiXhosa classes)

We voice our opinions with dignity and consideration for diversity

We respect the opinions and thoughts of others whose opinions may enhance our own
Proverbs Chp 15 vs 1: “A gentle answer quietens anger, but a harsh one stirs it up.”

GRATITUDE AND BELONGING

We are grateful for the progress made towards personal goals

We are grateful for the opportunities to exercise and show off sporting, cultural and academic skills

We are grateful because we belong, feel safe, cared for and loved

We are grateful for the enthusiasm and applause of others

We encourage ourselves and others to practice an attitude of gratitude and to foster feelings of belonging and success
“Victory is gained by resolution and determination.” Prophet Mohammed

RUDE & ABUSIVE BEHAVIOUR

We do not tolerate bullying or any threat to the sense of safety and sense of belonging of others, by providing the means for every girl to be able to protect herself by using the correct channels (peers, prefects, teacher, grade heads, heads of department, deputy principal and principal)

We do not tolerate disrespectful or offensive behaviour, nor do we tolerate verbal abuse aimed at teachers, non-teaching staff and fellow learners

“Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.” Eleanor Rooseveld

PUNCTUALITY AND ATTENDANCE

We consider the attendance registers for both class and extra-mural activities central to good conduct

We insist on always being on time

We expect projects, homework and tasks with deadlines to be handed in on time

“Time is free but it’s priceless.”  Harvey MacKay

NEGATIVITY

We never put anyone down (make anyone feel less valued)

We avoid negative attitudes because negative thinking leads to negative actions

“The critic is one who knows who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.” Oscar Wilde

HARMFUL & ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES OR WEAPONS

It is illegal to possess, threaten or use dangerous weapons

It is illegal to possess, use or trade any narcotic or unauthorized drugs, alcohol and intoxicating substances of any nature

“Drugs are a waste of time. They destroy your memory and self-respect.”

Physical fighting, assault or abuse is prohibited. It is not only breaking the Code of Conduct, it is breaking the law of the land

Indecent behaviour, swearing or verbal abuse is seen in the same light as the above

Victimisation and intimidation of other learners are not tolerated

Girls are strongly advised not to retaliate, but to report cases immediately

We accept that there are serious consequences for all of the above
“There is no substitute for hard work.”  Thomas A. Edison

VANDALISM

We abhor unlawful and destructive conduct

We bring action against perpetrators of any graffiti, vandalism or destruction of school property

We encourage the reporting of incidents of vandalism as the parents of the culprits have to be notified

We believe that there are consequences for every action
