Senior Hockey

The U14A team have played two matches. In the first game they drew 3-3 to Linkside in an away game.  Captain Caydin Nicolaai scored the first two goals of the season and Jamie-Lee Daniels scored in the second half.  Against Victoria Girls from Grahamstown, we lost 3-1 in a humdinger of a match.  Captain Caydin Nicolaai scored the goal in the first half (and also received a Player of the Match trophy at assembly).

The U16B team is full of promise and achieved a well deserved 1-0 victory against Nico Malan.  Players showing good form include Reilly van Heerden and Shanice Pietersen.

The U16B team is full of character.  The team is captained by Megan de Beer who looks to be a player to watch this season.

The Second Team Hockey Team got off to a shaky start as we had to scramble for players to make a full team.  In their match against Nico Malan, after conceding three goals in the first ten minutes, the team did not let the match get away from them.  They kept the opponents out of their scoring area for the remainder of the match.  The team won an exciting match against DF Malherbe where they scored early and managed to stay on top of the opposition to win the match 3-0.  The coach is proud as they have developed exponentially as a team and show great team spirit.

The First Team has tasted victory and defeat in the first half of the season.  Memorable victories against formidable opponents have indicated great promise for the remainder of the season.  These include an unforgettable 1-0 victory against Westering and a gritty 1-0 victory against St Dominics Priory.  Showing great promise this season is Rushni Salie, on her defence and attacking game, and Lindsay McFarlane, who has been dynamic in spearheading attacking efforts.  This is a team to watch as they are just getting into their stride.

Against Volkskool on 7 June, the following results were attained:  U16B lost 2-0, U16A lost 1-0, Second Team drew 1-1 and the First Team drew 1-1.

Madlavu, G. Vorster, M. Langford, M. Moosa, L. Naidoo, E. Kettledas.

Junior Hockey

The U11B played two matches and had a lot of fun.  They lost 3-0 to Sundridge with Lee-Ann Stuurman playing beautifully.  Against Erica, the girls lost 5-0 and the players who stood out were goalie, Chevelle Ludeke, sweeper Aphiwe Bantom and Yibanathi Mjoli who impressed with her skills.  A special thank you to Claire Naidoo and Michaela Klassen of the Senior Second Team who are always willing to umpire games and give advice to the team.

The U11A team lost 3-1 against Summerwood in an excellent first game with the goal scored being a team effort from Zahraa Isaacs and Chelsey Adams.

The U14B team have a lot of heart.  Keziah Brandt and Phumelela Kwanini captain the team.  Special mention must be made of Megan Gunter, Aphiwe Ngona and Naledi Mankayi for their improvement.

Mini Hockey

The Grade 4 Mini Hockey players played their first match against Erica with Jessica Assumption scoring the first goal of the session for the A team.  Even though the B team lost 3-2, Captain Erinn Kettledas motivated her team beautifully.  In the match against Summerwood, the A team played magnificently and Erinn Kettledas scored a goal.  The girls had great fun playing against Woodridge with Shaakirah Mallick and Simone Lovemore scoring three goals each.  The girls were jumping for joy after the final whistle.

Matric Farewell

Our matric farewell will take place on Friday 21 June.  The invitation was made from glass, one that was very creative and serves as a keepsake.  We wish Mrs Bean, Mrs Metcalf, Mrs Stroebel and the Dance Committee the best of luck with their preparations and congratulate them on their efforts.  A reminder that only matrics, their partners and invited guests are allowed on the school premises on the evening of this event.

Interact

Interact collected items for the Rape Crisis Centre.  They also cleaned up the school ahead of Founder’s Day.

Gatsby Outing

On 12th June the Olympiad Matrics, and this included any Matric who had ever written the English Olympiad, went off on an excursion to Port Elizabeth to see the Baz Luhrman version of The Great Gatsby. Meaning to see the 3D version at Walmer Park, Tahlia, Tonielle, Courtney, Olwethu (Shirley), Olwethu (Moxi), Nikita, Palesa, Sethu and Sesona set off armed with 3D glasses and Clicks club cards, but the wrong information had been given so we rushed off to the Boardwalk and saw the show at 16.30 instead. It was worth the rush. The movie, which was panned by the local critics, got rave reviews from our girls, who thought it perfectly captured the spirit of the 1920s, the exuberance of the Jazz Age, the newness and romance of the Motor Cars,  and the exact nature of Gatsby himself and Jordan Baker, both of whom are exactly as they should be imagined. We strongly recommend all Matrics to see the show.

Committees and Societies

Hundreds of applications were received from learners wishing to serve on committees for the 2013-2014 term of office.  All girls wishing to serve on committees are required to attend the leadership seminar on 26 July and the Cultural Party, where new committees are announced, on 2 August.  It is important for learners to remember that to be elected to committees, is required involvement beforehand in the society and sustained work thereafter.

Drama Production 2014

The annual drama production for 2014 will be entitled “faces and places: where geography and psychology collide”.  Rehearsals are already under way and we wish the cast and crew well in their preparations.  The first 80 learners to pay their R100 will be included in the cast and crew and attendance at rehearsals from the outset is imperative.

Blood Donations

Blood donations take place once a term in our school student centre.  Parents are welcome to donate at school on these days.  Thank you to Mrs Hickson for the organising of this worthwhile endeavour and to the girls who regularly donate.

Trashion Show

The Trashion Show was a RCL project that aimed to support the Going Green campaign and foster the bonding of learners and class teachers.  Sustainable consciousness in the school was achieved in showing that we can re-use items and give them a second life, and, we had fun in the process.  The girls designed outfits for their teachers to wear and it was a hilarious assembly.  Grade 10C with their teacher, Mrs Elie, came first.  Mrs Myburg, wearing a Grade 12R design, was crowned Mrs Personality.  Mrs du Plessis wore a practical African outfit, designed by Grade 9C, came second.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Miss van der Westhuizen and Miss Inggs who will be tying the knot these holidays and returning in the  new term as married ladies. Miss van der Westhuizen will marry Tiaan Viljoen on 6 July and Miss Inggs will marry Chris Panayiotou on 22 June.  Mr Weidemann, his wife and Luke have welcomed a new addition to the family, a son, Joshua.  Mrs Stear is to become a granny of twins soon.  Mrs Myburg’s son, Peter, was selected as Mr PE 2013.

The Riebeek College Girls’ High School Choir has 68 dedicated members and has attained gold at the Regional Round of the ATKV Applous Competition in the More Experienced Non Afrikaans speaking category.  The choir teacher, Mrs Rene Zietsmann, a teacher at Strelitzia High, has worked with the choir for many years and has taught the girls the value of discipline and hard work.  The choir rehearses every day, on weekends and during holidays and there is a great sense of fellowship among the girls.  They now await to hear if they will receive an invitation from the ATKV to the National Round once all the regional rounds are completed and adjudication has been finalised.  This year the National ATKV Applous Competition will take place in Bloemfontein.  Previously the girls have travelled to Bloemfontein, Cape Town and Pretoria for these annual events.  The girls performed Verlore Liefde, Heuningwals (a prescribed piece), Wade in the Watah, eZulwini ngokuthandaza.  The last piece was composed by Mbulelo Nzo and was entered in the African song category and was composed especially for the Riebeek Choir.  This song is conducted by the Head of Choir, Uluthando Mdingane, a grade 12 learner at the school.  Staff members Mrs Patty Metcalf accompanied the girls on the piano for Heunigwals and Mr Anton Calitz accompanied the girls on guitar for Verlore Liefde.  Uluthando Mdingane said of their Gold certificate: “I cannot stop smiling.  I am so proud of the girls who have been so amazing.  We are so grateful to our teachers and our God.  Our experiences in Choir make us disciplined and driven.”

Four of Riebeek College’s Senior Prefects had the privilege of attending Free State University’s Annual National Leadership Summit. It took place on the 5th to the 7th of April whereby over 200 students from all over the county gathered to learn about Emotional Intelligence.  Below are Taryn Balie, Kim Daniels, Urslynn Machui and Tonielle Prince pictured with Director and Vice-Chancellor of the Free State University, Professor Jonathan Jansen.

Achievers

The Daniel Sisters

114

Under the strong influence of their father, both Daniels’ sisters have become well known in Uitenhage for their golfing achievements. Kim (17) obtained her EP u12 colours at the age of nine and was also the only girl in an 8-man team for her first two years of representing EP’s u12 side. She obtained her u14 colours at the age of 11 and her Senior EP Ladies colours at the age of 13. She was the youngest player the EP Senior side had ever had. She has represented South Africa in the Poland World Juniors in Warsaw, Poland and in India, New Dehli where she formed part of a 2-man team that competed in the 3rd annual Albatross Junior Open. Throughout all of this Kim has remained the number one female junior golfer in EP and in currently lying 11th on the South African Junior Girls Order of Merit. She has also proved to be a strong captain that has led EP to many victories.

Jamie-Lee (13) is following in the footsteps of her sister and has achieved much in her short career. She was born into the game and could swing a club before she could walk. She obtained her EP u12 colours by the age of 8, her EP U14 colours by the age of 10 as well as her EP U18 colours at that age. She is slowly but surely making a name for herself in the golfing industry and hopes to one day make it her career.

Latecomers

Lateness is a sign of poor time management skills.  When you are late for appointments, late for class, late for school, you show a lack of respect for other people’s time and your own time.  You disrupt the administrative staff, teachers and the girls in class.  If learners are late more than five times in a month, learners have a detention.  Learners must be at school by 7.35 when the first bell rings. Life is less stressful and it is really worthwhile to always be on time.

Reminders

Windbreakers may not be worn in the classrooms or corridors as they are for outdoor use.  Name badges are compulsory.  Learners need to remember that personal hygiene is best attended to in bathrooms and therefore lip gloss or lip balm should only be applied in the bathroom. It is not permitted to apply it in the classroom.  Learners may not eat or drink in class or the passages. Learners are expected to walk quietly and in single file in the passages.  The office staff are not permitted to accept money from parents at the office to be passed on to the learners.  Projects and items forgotten at home may not be handed in at the office by parents for learners to collect.  The learners need to develop a sense of responsibility and need to face the consequence of their actions should they leave something at home.
